Hungary: Commission launches infringement procedure against Hungary for failing to comply with EU electronic communications rules
The European Commission launched, on 9 June 2021, an infringement procedure against Hungary for failure to comply with EU telecommunication principles of proportionality and non-discrimination as set out in the European Electronic Communications Code (Directive (EU) 2018/1972). In particular, the Commission highlighted that the Hungarian Media Council's decision to reject the renewal of Klubradio's application was disproportionate and non-transparent, and also noted that the Hungarian national media law had been applied in a discriminatory way.
As a result, the Commission stated that Hungary has two months to reply to the arguments of the Commission, otherwise the Commission may take the next steps in infringement procedure and send Hungary a reasoned opinion.
