Guernsey: ODPA releases data breach statistics for second quarter of 2023

The Office of the Data Protection Authority (ODPA) released, on July 12, 2023, its latest breach statistics for the period between April 2023 to June 2023. The ODPA noted that 32 personal data breaches had been reported affecting 549 people. Notably, the ODPA highlighted that one of the cases involved an employee who had used a personal device to record a customer's personal data for work purposes, because an IT system failure meant they had no access to a work device. To this end, the ODPA noted the importance of companies having resilience procedures in place and a clear process for employees to follow in the event of an IT outage or other events.

Furthermore, the ODPA confirmed that breach statistics will be published quarterly and will include two new criteria, namely the severity of the reported breaches and the total number of people affected.
