EU: Parliament and Council reach agreement on the European Health Data Space
On March 15, 2024, the European Commission announced that a political agreement was reached between the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on the European Health Data Space (EHDS).
What is the content of the agreement?
The EHDS aims to establish clear rules on the secure exchange, use, and reuse of health data to improve health care, delivery, research, innovation, and policymaking.
The new rules ensure full compliance with the EU data protection rules and fundamental rights, providing:
- citizens with full control over their health data by granting immediate and easy access to their digital health data within the EU;
- health professionals with access to medical records of a patient in case of treatment in another member state; and
- strict data security and access conditions for the re-use of health data for research and public health uses.
What are the next steps?
The EHDS is set to become applicable in different stages according to use case and data type, once the Parliament and the Council have formally adopted the Regulation.
