EU: JRC publishes annual report for 2019
The European Commission's Joint Research Centre ('JRC') published, on 1 July 2020, its annual report for 2019 ('the Annual Report'). In particular, the Annual Report outlines, among other things, the increase of digital transformation, challenges for cybersecurity, data protection in the context of online platforms for treating rare diseases, and the use of biometric data. More specifically, the Annual Report discusses the emergence of artificial intelligence ('AI'), the establishment of digital platforms, and the use of data, as well as stating that, with respect to the European Platform on Rare Disease Registration, patient data remains anonymous. Moreover, the Annual Report highlights a focus on monitoring AI developments through the service known as 'AI Watch' and the increasing emphasis of AI Watch on fairness, accountability, and transparency.
