Egypt: EG-CERT addresses cybersecurity risks

The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology ('MCIT') announced that the Malware Analysis Department of the Egyptian Computer Emergency Readiness Team ('EG-CERT'), affiliated with the National Centre for Cybersecurity and responsible for securing against cybersecurity incidents and network emergencies as well as mitigating against cyber threats, has called on organisations to adhere to the following precautions:

  • ensure remote access to the organisation's network requires the use of multi-factor authentication;
  • ensure that software used is updated periodically;
  • guarantee that all ports and protocols that are considered unnecessary to achieve work tasks are disabled; and
  • ensure that the IT department has reviewed and implemented the necessary cybersecurity controls in the event that cloud services are used.

Moreover, the MCIT notes that the above mentioned follows from the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the Canadian Centre for Cybersecurity's warning stipulating a set of measures and procedures that organisations should implement to safeguard their infrastructure and networks from potential cyber threats.
