China: MIIT announces investigation into apps for illegal collection of users personal information

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology ('MIIT') announced, on 16 March 2023, an investigation into and special rectification actions against mobile apps. In particular, the MIIT highlighted the illegal collection of users personal information by the cracked version of apps, including app distributions platforms, e-commerce platforms, and search platforms such as Bilibili, Baidu, and Kugou among others. More specifically, the MIIT outlined that 436 illegal download links have been rectified.

Going forward, the MIIT noted that the need to ensure internet platforms implement their main responsibilities, increase inspections and investigations, and rectify illegal apps. Secondly, the MIIT detailed the need to strengthen app technical testing, supervision, and inspection and maintain deterrence against violations of laws and regulations.
