China: CAC issues provisions on management of internet users' account information
The Cyberspace Administration of China ('CAC') issued, on 27 June 2022, its Provisions on the Management of Internet Users' Account Information. In particular, the CAC highlighted that the Provisions apply to the registration, use, and management of internet users' account information by internet information service providers within the territory of the People's Republic of China, unless laws and administrative regulations provide otherwise. More specifically, the Provisions provide that internet information service providers must protect and handle internet users' account information in accordance with law, and take measures to prevent unauthorised access, leakage, tampering, and loss of the same. In addition, the Provisions stipulate that internet information service providers must equip themselves with professional and technical capabilities to implement account verification and authentication, adopt emergency responses, protect personal information, and establish other management systems, among other things.
The Provisions will enter into force on 1 August 2022.
