California: Bill relating to in-vehicle cameras introduced to State Senate

Senator Bill Dodd announced, on 3 February 2023, that Senate Bill 296 on in-vehicle cameras, for An act to add Chapter 36 (commencing with Section 22948.50) to Division 8 of the Business and Professions Code, relating to business, was introduced, on 2 February 2023, to the California State Senate, and thereafter referred, on the same date, to the State Senate Committee on Rules. In particular, the bill would require drivers to be notified when images are gathered by in-vehicle cameras and would prohibit their sale to third parties or for advertising purposes. In addition, Dodd specified that the bill would place restrictions on the retention and transfer of video recordings from in-vehicle cameras, and consumers would not have to take action to prevent their in-vehicle video recordings from being collected without their permission or knowledge.
