Bermuda: PIPA to enter into effect January 1, 2025

On June 16, 2023, the Bermuda Office of the Privacy Commissioner (PrivCom) announced, in a joint press release with the Bermuda Government, that the Personal Information Protection Act 2016 (PIPA) will be officially implemented on January 1, 2025. As such, PrivCom highlighted that this means that organizations in Bermuda have 18 months to prepare for the full implementation of PIPA.

In this regard, PrivCom expressed that it will continue to work with organizations to help them understand the requirements of PIPA and ensure its adoption, whereby it will be working with all kinds of businesses to help ensure a smooth transition. PrivCom also outlined that it will continue to produce guidance, noting that it will soon publish a comprehensive 'Guide to PIPA' which will include tips, checklists, and other advice for organizations, as well as guides on specific topics, such as what privacy means in the employment context and detailed guides for individuals' rights.
