Belgium: DPA approves EU Cloud Code of Conduct, the first transnational EU code of conduct
The Belgian Data Protection Authority ('Belgian DPA') announced, on 20 May 2021, that it had approved the EU Cloud Code of Conduct, which constitutes the first transnational code of conduct to be adopted with the EU since the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2016/679) ('GDPR'), following approval from the European Data Protection Board of the same.
In particular, the EU Cloud Code of Conduct aims to establish good data protection practices for cloud services providers and will contribute to a better protection of personal data processed in the cloud in Europe. In addition, the Belgian DPA accredited SCOPE Europe as the monitoring body for the code, which will ensure that code members comply with the code.
Furthermore, the Belgian DPA noted that it will continue to encourage the development of codes of conduct.
The code is operational from the date of the announcement.
