Bavaria: BayLfD's activity report highlights preventive, knowledge-based approach to data protection

On June 14, 2023, the Bavarian data protection authority (BayLfD) announced the publication of its 2022 activity report. The report details how the BayLfD pursued a preventive approach based on providing guidance on how to avoid data protection violations and advising legislative bodies on this matter. In this regard, the BayLfD highlighted that its aim is to enable as many Bavarian public bodies as possible to process personal data in their respective areas of responsibility by expanding its resources.

Key takeways

The report outlines the BayLfD's application of a preventive approach across various sectors, including:

  • social and health administration, where the BayLfD clarified data protection issues in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic;
  • tax and financial administration, where the BayLfD acted as the competent supervisory authority with regard to the introduction of the Bavarian property tax; and
  • the education sector, where the BayLfD provided guidance in the context of video surveillance for remote examinations at Bavarian universities, among other things.
