Australia: OAIC releases statement on MediSecure data breach

On May 21, 2024, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) issued a statement in response to reports of a data breach at MediSecure. The OAIC confirmed that it had been notified of the breach and stated that it had launched preliminary inquiries with MediSecure to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme. The OAIC further explained that its initial focus is ensuring that affected individuals are appropriately informed, so they may take steps to protect themselves from any further risk to their personal information.
