Australia: OAIC addresses data breach spike in second half of 2022

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner ('OAIC') issued, via LinkedIn, on 16 March 2023, a statement in which it noted that its latest notifiable data breaches report showed a significant increase in data breaches in the second half of 2022, the majority of which were caused by cybersecurity incidents. In particular, the OAIC encouraged organisations to check that they have taken appropriate and proactive steps to protect against, and respond to, a range of cyber threats.

In this regard, the OAIC noted that organisations may start by implementing the Australian Cyber Security Centre's ('ACSC') Essential Eight cyber security strategies and that further advice on securing personal information may be found on its website here.
