Australia: ASD publishes cybersecurity resources for small businesses

On June 12, 2024, the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) announced that it had released cybersecurity resources for small businesses that outline the common cyber threats impacting small and medium businesses and provide guidance on how organizations can protect themselves online. The resources include a guide, a checklist, and a presentation providing cyber tips for businesses.

Threats to small businesses

The guide explains that small businesses face various cyber threats, including business email compromise attacks, scam messages, and malicious software such as ransomware. The guide notes that cyberattacks can be costly and that in the 2022-23 financial year, the average cost of cybercrime for both medium and small businesses increased.

Cybersecurity measures

In response, the guide and the checklist outline measures that organizations can take to mitigate cyber threats, including:

  • turning on multifactor authentication;
  • using strong passwords or passphrases;
  • implementing access controls;
  • educating employees on good cybersecurity practices;
  • securing networks and external services; and
  • keeping software updated.
