Australia: ACMA finds Channel Nine in breach of privacy rules

The Australian Communications and Media Authority ('ACMA') announced, on 19 November 2020, that the General Television Corporation Pty Ltd (Channel Nine) had breached privacy rules under the Television Industry Code of Practice 2015 (revised in 2018). In particular, the ACMA found that three news reports had disclosed the residential addresses of two police officers. Furthermore, the ACMA noted that, under the code, broadcasters are not permitted to broadcast material that invades an individual's privacy unless there is a public interest reason or the individual has consented.
