Asia-Pacific Bodies: ASEAN releases statement on digital connectivity

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations ('ASEAN') released, on 4 November 2019, the ASEAN Plus Three Leaders' Statement on Connecting the Connectivities Initiative ('the Statement'). In particular, the Statement highlights strategic areas including, digital innovation and regulatory excellence, and emphasises the recommitment of the participants in regards to several connectivity initiatives. Moreover, the Statement specifies an agreement to promote digital connectivity and innovation through measures such as exchanging information on regulatory frameworks, sharing best practices, and supporting the establishment of an ASEAN open data network. In addition, the Statement outlines, among other things, agreements to enhance regulatory harmonisation and the mutual recognition of standards, as well as enhancing cybercrime prevention.
