Asia-Pacific Bodies: ASEAN releases ministerial statement on telecommunications and information

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations ('ASEAN') released, on 25 October 2019, a joint statement from the 19th ASEAN Telecommunications and Information Technology Ministers Meeting and Related Meetings ('the Statement'). In particular, the Statement notes that the Ministers welcomed recommendations to establish an ASEAN Computer Emergency Response Team ('CERT') in order to facilitate capacity enhancement, real-time coordination, and threat information sharing amongst national CERTs. Moreover, the Statement outlines that Ministers had agreed to establish the Coordinating Committee on Cybersecurity, and had supported recommendations to establish best practice guides for, among other things, e-service delivery platforms. In addition, the Statement highlights initiatives taken with regard to international cooperation on cybersecurity in association with China, Japan, the US, and the EU, and specifies future steps to develop these relationships.
