ADGM: ADGM enacts Data Protection Regulations 2021

The Abu Dhabi Global Market ('ADGM') announced, on 14 February 2021, that it had enacted the Data Protection Regulations 2021, following a public consultation on the same. In particular, the ADGM outlined that the regulations, which replace the current Data Protection Regulations 2015, aim to increase the protection of personal data processed in ADGM and that the ADGM Board has appointed Mr. Sami Mohammed as the ADGM Commissioner of Data Protection to head the newly established Office of Data Protection for a term of four years. Furthermore, the ADGM highlighted that the regulations propose a 12 month transition period for current establishments, and six months for new establishments, to commence from 14 February 2021. In addition, the Office of Data Protection noted that it is currently updating its guidance in line with the new regulations.
