Virginia: Password protection law enacted
Virginia's Governor, Terry McAuliffe, signed, on 23 March 2015, the Password Protection Law (HB 2081) ('the Law'), in order to protect applicants' and employees' personal online accounts.
The Law prohibits an employer from requesting that applicants or employees disclose the username and passwords of their social media accounts. It also prohibits any employer from requiring that applicants or employees add colleagues or future colleagues to the list of contacts associated with their social media account. The Law applies to both, public and private sectors.
The Law will become effective on 1 July 2015.
