Virginia: Governor signs electric utility stakeholder group bill into law

The Virginia Governor, Ralph S. Northam, signed, on 14 March 2019, House Bill 2332 ('the Act') into law, which requires the State Corporation Commission ('the Commission') to convene a stakeholder group ('the Group') to review certain elements of electric utility customer privacy considerations. In particular, these considerations include data sharing, protection of personally identifiable information, opt-in/out conditions for electric utilities' access to customers' energy usage data, and notice requirements by electric utilities to customers regarding energy usage data being collected.

The Act requires the Group to conclude its review by 1 April 2020, and the Commission must report the Group's recommendations to the Virginia General Assembly.
