Virginia: Governor signs breach notification amendment bill into law

The Viriginia Governor, Ralph S. Northam, signed, on 18 March 2019, a bill relating to data breach notification (HB 2396) ('the Act'), into law, following its approval by the Virginia Legislature on 21 February 2019. In particular, the Act amends Virginia's breach notification law by expanding the definition of 'personal information' to include where passport numbers and military identification numbers are accessed in combination with an individual's first name or first initial and last name.

The Act will come into force on 1 July 2019.
