Virginia: Governor approves tax return data breach notification bill

The Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam, approved, on 9 March 2018, a bill to introduce An Act to Amend the Code of Virginia by Adding a Section Numbered 58.1-341.2, Relating to Notification of Tax Return Data Breach (HB 183), which will require paid income tax return preparers to notify the Department of Taxation within a reasonable time period if they discover that an unauthorised person has accessed and acquired a taxpayer's unencrypted or unredacted return information.

The amendments have been codified as Chapter 283 of the Code of Virginia and will enter into force on 1 July 2018.
