Uzbekistan: Data localisation rule enters into force

Amendments to Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan of 2 July 2019 No. ЗРУ-547 on Personal Data entered into force, on 16 April 2021, to introduce a new data localisation rule. In particular, the amendments specify that where the processing of personal data involves the information of Uzbek citizens and uses information technologies, including via global information networks, owners and operators of databases are obliged to:

  • ensure data is collected, systematised, and stored using technical means physically located on the territory of Uzbekistan; and
  • register such databases in the prescribed manner in the State Register of Personal Databases.

Notably, the State Center for Personalisation under the Cabinet of Ministers issued, on 25 February 2021, a statement to clarify the rule's impact on social networking platforms.

You can read the amendments, only available in Uzbek, here.
