USA: Bill for informing consumers about smart devices introduced to Senate

Senate Bill ('SB') 90 for A bill to require the disclosure of a camera or recording capability in certain internet-connected devices was introduced, on 25 January 2023, to the U.S. Senate. In particular, SB 90 would require the Federal Trade Commission ('FTC') to create disclosure guidelines for manufacturers of internet-connected devices, such as products that have audio or visual recording components, including refrigerators, washers, dryers, and dishwashers, as well as any household devices and appliances that are equipped with cameras and/or microphones capable of recording consumers and that also include Wi-Fi capability to transmit data without their knowledge.

Lastly, SB 90 would not apply to mobile phones, laptops, or other devices that a consumer would reasonably expect to include a camera or microphone.
