UK: ICO advises on transparency and purpose limitation when collecting customer and visitor information

The Information Commissioner's Office ('ICO') issued, on 18 September 2020, guidance for organisations mandated to collect customer and visitor information ('the Guidance'). In particular, the Guidance advises companies to follow five steps, namely asking only about information that has been set out in the Government guidance, be transparent about how personal data is being used, keeping data secure, not using the personal information collected for contact tracing for other purposes, such as direct marketing, profiling, or data analytics, and erasing or disposing of the personal information collected after 21 days.
