UK: Geospatial Commission issues guidance on investing in location data

The UK Government Geospatial Commission published, on 4 August 2022, guidance to support public sector investments in location data, titled 'Measuring the Economic, Social and Environmental Value of Public Sector Location Data'. In particular, the Commission highlighted that public sector investments have struggled with location data investments, with the guidance seeking to provide a more structured and practical approach. In addition, the guidance establishes a seven-step framework to understand, assess, and articulate the value of a local data project. More specifically, the guidance details that valuation of location data is problematic, in that it is often only realised when combined with other datasets, while the value may also vary depending on the intended use of the location data.

Furthermore, the guidance clarifies that the relevant framework should be used on a case-by-case basis.
