UK: Data centres classed as Critical National Infrastructure
On September 12, 2024, the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) announced that the Government had now classed UK data centers, the buildings that store the data generated in the UK, as Critical National Infrastructure (CNI). The DSIT noted that CNI classification will include both the physical data centers and the cloud operators that use them to supply ordinary services.
What is the effect of the designation?
The DSIT explained that the designation will:
- make the data housed and processed in UK data centers less likely to be compromised during outages, cyber attacks, and adverse weather events;
- allow the data centers sector to get greater Government support in recovering from and anticipating critical incidents;
- deter cyber criminals from targeting data centers that may house vital health and financial data; and
- enable the setting up of a dedicated CNI data infrastructure team to monitor and anticipate potential threats, provide prioritized access to security agencies, and coordinate access to emergency services should an incident occur.
