Thailand: PDPC investigates breach of government scholarship students' data

On July 11, 2024, the Personal Data Protection Committee (PDPC) announced that it is investigating a personal data leak of government scholarship students from the information system of the Civil Service Commission Office (CSC), following notification and instruction from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES). The leaked information, belonging to both current and graduated government scholarship students, included copies of ID cards, copies of passports, airline ticket information, and other personal data.

The PDPC noted that the CSC notified it of the incident that occurred in April 2024 due to the artificial intelligence (AI) data retrieval mechanism of the search engine, which allows the personal data of scholarship students to be accessed by searching for information via Microsoft Bing. In the notification report, the CSC informed that it has investigated, fixed the problem, and blocked access to data from various search engines, including coordinating with Microsoft Thailand to delete some of the data caches that may still be remaining in the Microsoft Bing system.
