Thailand: MDES publishes statement on SMEs, the PDPA and the expected enforcement of supplementary laws

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society ('MDES') published, on 15 June 2022, a statement on the exemption of small and medium-sized enterprises ('SMEs') and community enterprises from the the Personal Data Protection Act 2019 ('PDPA'), and the expected enforcement of the supplementary legislation to the PDPA. In particular, the MDES clarified that SMEs are exempt from complying with the PDPA in certain circumstances, which will be further explained under the supplementary legislation, which will be introduced under the PDPA, whereby a total of eight different laws are expected to come into force during the month of June 2022.

Moreover, the MDES noted that the introduction of some of these supplementary laws are expected to be signed into law and published within the Royal Gazette by early next week.
