Sri Lanka: Official Gazette publishes enforcement dates for PDPA

On January 8, 2024, the Gazette of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka released an Order regarding the implementation dates of the Personal Data Protection Act, No. 9 of 2022 (PDPA) (Order). In this regard, the President and the Minister of Technology, Ranil Wickremesinghe, issued the Order in accordance with Section 1(3) of the PDPA and Article 44 of the Constitution of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. The following appointments were made:

  • December 1, 2023, was designated as the effective date for the enforcement of the provisions outlined in Parts VI, VIII, IX, and X of the PDPA; and
  • March 18, 2025, was specified as the effective date for the enforcement of the provisions outlined in Parts I, II, III, and VII of the PDPA.
