South Africa: Regulator invites comments on draft Guidelines on Registration of Information Officers

The Information Regulator ('the Regulator') published, on 17 July 2020, its draft Guidelines on the Registration of Information Officers ('the Guidelines') and invited comments on the same. In particular, the Regulator outlined that the Guidelines require, among other things, that a responsible party registers its Information Officer with the Regulator before taking up their respective duties in terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 and the Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2000. Furthermore, the Guidelines provide guidance and the procedures for registration, training, and designation of both Information Officers and deputies with the Regulator, including their duties and responsibilities, and template agreements to be used by internal Information Officers with their deputies.

Regulator extends deadline for comment

The Regulator published, on 12 August 2020, an erratum to extend the deadline for submission of comments on the Guidelines to 31 August 2020.
