Nigeria: Senate passes Nigerian Data Protection Bill 2023

The Nigerian Senate announced on Twitter, on 3 May 2023, that Nigerian Data Protection Bill, 2023 (Senate Bill 1114) had passed its third reading. In particular, the National Data Protection Bureau ('NDPB') had released, on 4 October 2022, the draft Data Protection Bill, 2022. OneTrust DataGuidance Research confirmed with Ridwaan Boda, Executive at ENSafrica's Corporate Commercial practice, that:

"The Bill was passed by the Senate on 3 May 2023. The process of passing the Bill has been expedited as it underwent a second reading on 2 May 2023, and [the Bill] was subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrimes to review. The Committee was given four weeks to review it and present a report before the Senate. However, the Committee reported back to the Senate the next day and the Bill underwent a third (and final) reading in the Senate and was passed. The Bill has now been sent to the House of Representatives to be considered. Once passed, it will be sent to the President to sign. The current President's term ends on 29 May 2023, [it is expected] that the Bill will also be assented to in the House of Representatives through an expedited process in order to give the President a chance to assent to the Bill before his term ends".
