New Zealand: Parliament launches public consultation on protection of whistleblowers bill

The New Zealand Parliament launched, on 2 July 2020, a public consultation on the Protected Disclosures (Protection of Whistleblowers) Bill ('the Bill') which would replace the Protected Disclosures Act 2000. In particular, the Bill aims to clarify, among other things, the definition of a serious wrongdoing, enable individuals to report a serious wrongdoing directly to an appropriate authority at any time, strengthen protections for disclosers, and clarify the internal procedural requirements for public sector organisations. Furthermore, the Bill would apply to both private and public sector organisations, however some provisions apply specifically to public sector organisations and to public funds and functions.

Comments can be submitted online by 12 August 2020.

You can read the Bill here, track the Bill's progress here, and make a submission here.
