New Zealand: Bill introduced to expand offences under harmful digital communications law

The New Zealand Parliament announced, on 24 March 2021, that a bill expanding the scope of the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2015 is being considered by the Justice Committee. In particular, the Parliament clarified that the bill aims to prevent harm caused by the sharing of intimate recordings via digital communications without the consent of the individual concerned. In addition to introducing an offence for such acts, the Parliament noted that the bill will also impact online content hosts who have a duty under the Act to, among other things, notify authors of unauthorised content and to remove or disable such content.

Submissions to the Justice Committee are being accepted until 23 April 2021.
