Netherlands: NCSC announces report on integration of behavioural sciences in Security by Design

The National Cyber Security Centre ('NCSC') announced, on 14 September 2021, a report written by Leiden University commissioned by the NCSC regarding the best practices and possibilities for follow-up research on the integration of behavioural sciences in Security by Design methodologies and projects. In particular, the report highlights that the aim of security by behavioural design, which is the main focus area of the report, is to design systems in such way that the users of these systems is more likely to behave in a secure manner. Moreover, the report aims to cover the research that empirically tests the effectiveness of various methods where solutions are proposed but not tested. Furthermore, the report shares general insights and provides suggestions for future researches. In addition, the report focuses mainly on nudging , also known as choice architecture, and techno regulation, which is an area of law that suggests that security can be forced by taking away the freedom not to choose it.

You can read the press releases here and download the report here, both available in Dutch.
