Netherlands: AP publishes statement on the use of location data during Coronavirus

The Dutch data protection authority ('AP') published, on 1 April 2020, a statement ('the Statement') on the use of location data to help the Government in the fight against COVID-19 ('Coronavirus). In particular, the Statement highlights that using location data is possible only if there is statutory legislation in place, and notes that, in case the Parliament passes a bill, the AP will pay close attention to it to ensure such a measure is clear, proportionate to its purpose, and contains sufficient guarantees. In addition, the Statement outlines that location data is not anonymous and that it is impossible for the consent of all people to be obtained.
