Netherlands: AP publishes statement on budget

The Dutch data protection authority ('AP') issued, on 21 September 2021, a statement expressing its disappointment that it had been allocated a budget of €25 million on the budget memorandum, which is the same as in 2021. In particular, the AP noted that it expected the budget to grow to €100 million, comparable to other Dutch regulators, to be able to monitor the protection of personal data. Moreover, the AP highlighted that according to an independent report, the AP's current budget of €25 million and staff headcount of 180 is insufficient to effectively carry out its tasks and that it must grow to an organisation of 470 full-time employees by 2025.

Furthermore, the AP emphasised that the House of Representatives had adopted a motion by a large majority in which it called on the Cabinet to increase the budget of the AP in line with the independent report.
