Netherlands: AP announces improved security of UWV online portals

The Dutch data protection authority ('AP') announced, on 4 June 2020, that the Employee Insurance Agency ('UWV') had improved the security of the online portal and secured the contained employee data, following the AP's investigation into the same. In particular, the AP outlined that it had previously issued a penalty to UWV of €150,000 per month of inadequate security, as UWV did not utilise multi-factor authentication for access to the portal which contained data regarding employee data such as the name, address, financial data, health data, and dismissal of employees in order to provide sickness benefits.
