Malaysia: PDP addresses allegations that personal information is being sold by Muslim Application Pro to U.S. military

The Department of Personal Data Protection ('PDP') released, on 24 November 2020, a statement addressing allegations that Muslim Application Pro Limited is selling customer data to the United States army. In particular, the PDP highlighted that Muslim Application Pro had denied that it had sold personal information to the U.S. military for anti-terrorism purposes and emphasised that it is very committed to protecting the personal data of its users in accordance with the applicable data protection laws and regulations. In addition, the PDP outlined that 72% of Muslim Application Pro users are not registered which increases anonymity. Finally, the PDP reiterated the importance of data security, stressing that Muslim Application Pro should maintain the privacy of users at all times and not misuse personal information.
