Lower Saxony: LfD Niedersachsen publishes activity report 2023
On June 6, 2024, the Lower Saxony data protection authority (LfD Niedersachsen) presented its activity report for 2023 to the Lower Saxony State Parliament.
LfD Niedersachsen highlighted 2,207 increased number of complaints and a rise of 1,302 reported breaches. The breaches often involved the erroneous transmission of sensitive data, software misconfiguration, or data loss as a result of hacker attacks. Further, LfD Niedersachsen issued 51 fines totaling €5.3 million, noting that the amount was mainly due to three individual fines. The activity report states that numerous fines were issued in the area of video surveillance, including unauthorized video recording via dashcams, the use of cameras in the workplace, and the unlawful surveillance of an event area and its surroundings.
Notably, the activity report also addresses the data protection challenges in the training and use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Further, LfD Niedersachsen is currently appointing a committee of experts in AI, intended to provide the impetus for the use of AI in Lower Saxony's administration and economy and at the same time formulate framework conditions.
