Japan: METI announces approval of verification plan for regulated sandbox system

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ('METI') announced, on 26 June 2020, the approval of its verification plan for the regulated sandbox system ('the Verification Plan'). In particular, the METI highlighted that the Verification Plan will enable rapid verification, allowing new technologies to be verified without limiting the participants. Specifically, the METI noted that applicants will be able to keep communication data such as the date and time of SMS reception, the date and time of SMS transmission and arrival, among others, for five years. Finally, the METI emphasised that the verification tool will confirm the authenticity of the data in a SMS notification while comparing it with the existing certificate notification.
