Japan: METI announced deliberations on international standards for identity management using mobile devices

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry ('METI') announced, on 22 June 2020, deliberations on international standards for identity management using mobile devices ('the Identity Management system'). In particular, the METI notes that the Identity Management System is meant to ensure with high accuracy the identity of an individual, similar to a passport or driver's license, and allow accurate personal identification confirmation.

The METI noted that full scale discussions will begin in July 2020, aiming for international standardisation in 2022.
