Italy: Garante confirms users may be able to object to calls made with automated systems

The Italian data protection authority ('Garante') announced, on 18 January 2022, that it had issued, on 13 January 2022, a favourable opinion on the draft decree of the President of the Republic. In particular, the Garante noted that the draft decree provides for the establishment and functioning of the public register of subscribers opting out of the use of their personal data and their telephone number for sales or commercial promotions. Furthermore, the Garante highlighted that the draft decree would amend the functioning of the public register of oppositions, so that subscribers would be able to oppose the receipt of unwanted calls made with the use of automated systems.

In addition, the President of the Garante, Pasquale Stanzione, welcomed the regulatory change, outlining that the same would offer users protection against aggressive telemarketing practices.

You can read the announcement here and the opinion here, both only available in Italian.
