International: UK and Canada sign agreement on AI safety

On May 20, 2024, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) announced that the Governments of the UK and Canada signed an agreement to advance collaboration on artificial intelligence (AI) safety, between their respective AI safety institutes.

As part of the agreement, both countries will commit to sharing expertise for bolstering existing testing and evaluation work and to jointly identify other priority areas for research collaboration. Additionally, the countries will further specify the details of their collaboration, by working toward a Memorandum of Understanding on AI safety. Notably, the countries also intend to collaborate with the US AI Safety Institute on a program of research to catalyze the field of systemic AI safety, which relates to the safeguarding of societal systems into which AI is being deployed.
