International: Tech groups release digital policy recommendations in view of Summit of Americas
The Information Technology Industry Council ('ITI') published, on 25 May 2022, a set of digital policy recommendations drafted in collaboration with the Latin American Internet Association ('ALAI') ahead of the Summit of the Americas. In particular, the ITI noted that policymakers should seek to uphold such set of policy commitments in order to foster a resilient digital ecosystem throughout the Americas region.
In addition, the policy recommendations include, among others, the following commitments:
- to advance the use of digital tools to empower citizens and enhance their digital literacy and safety;
- to improve cooperation on digital trade, especially by facilitating secure cross-border data flows, the removal of tariffs, and other trade barriers that impact information and communications technology products and services;
- to facilitate affordable universal broadband internet access for all peoples of the Americas;
- to improve opportunities for businesses to participate in e-commerce and adopt digital technologies, digital financial services, and logistics services to improve their operations; and
- to preclude blocking or throttling of the internet, telecommunication, or digital platforms.
