International: Kenya and EU launch Adequacy Dialogue

On May 7, 2024, the European Union Delegation to Kenya Charge d'affairs a.i, Mr. Ondrej Simek, announced that Kenya and the EU have started an Adequacy Dialogue, the first in Africa.

Kenya adequacy decision

Speaking at the Network for African Data Protection Authorities (NADPA) Conference, Ondrej highlighted that if successful, the Adequacy Dialogue could result in an adequacy decision for Kenya.

As part of the Adequacy Dialogue, Ondrej explained that the EU would be working closely with the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner (ODPC) and the Ministry of Information, Communication and The Digital Economy to explore the possibility of building a safe 'personal data bridge' between Kenya and the EU.

Ondrej noted that an adequacy decision would not only facilitate free data flows between Kenya and the EU, but also complement the benefits of the recently concluded EU-Kenya Economic Partnership Agreement.
