International: EU-India Connectivity Partnership hints at convergence of data protection standards

The European Council and the Prime Minister of India's Office announced, on 8 May 2021, that the EU and India have entered into a 'Connectivity Partnership.' In particular, the partnership will explore initiatives to improve the connectivity between the two regions with a view of supporting digital, transport, and energy networks, as well as, the movement of people, goods, services, data, and capital. More importantly, the partnership aims to enhance the convergence between regulatory frameworks and to ensure a high level of data protection to facilitate safe and secure cross-border data flows. Notably, the partnership recognises that this may involve possible data adequacy decisions.
