International: Coalition of 100 groups call on Facebook to scrap Instagram for kids

The Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood announced, on 15 April 2021, that they together with an international coalition of 100 public health advocates from around the world sent a letter to Facebook, Inc. calling on them to scrap its plans to launch a version of Instagram for children. In particular, the letter noted that the current version of Instagram is not safe for children under 13 and that something must be done to protect the millions of children who have lied about their age to create Instagram accounts, especially since their presence on the platform could be a violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 and other nations' privacy laws. Moreover, the letter highlights that launching a version of Instagram for children under 13 is not the right solution and would put young users at great risk.
