Indonesia: Kominfo announces Government approach for AI governance

On March 6, 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) announced that the Government of Indonesia is presenting policies and governance to optimize the benefits and reduce the threats of artificial intelligence (AI) to society through horizontal and vertical approaches. In particular, Deputy Minister of Kominfo, Nezar Patria, stated: ''Even though Indonesia does not yet have special AI regulations, provisions on the impact of AI use have been regulated through existing policies. Combining a horizontal approach and a vertical approach, Indonesia is trying to produce a more comprehensive AI governance."

More specifically, Nezar stated that the horizontal approach was carried out through the implementation of Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions and its amendments, the Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL), as well as the circular letter on AI ethics. Additionally, Nezar explaines that they are coordinating with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to adopt global ethics on AI by implementing the Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM). Moreover, for the vertical approach, the sectoral authorities are provided space for presenting sector-specific provisions, such as in the financial, health, and education sectors.
