Illinois: Bill amending BIPA referred to House Rules Committee

On April 12, 2024, Senate Bill 2979 amending the Biometric Information Privacy Act was referred to the Illinois House of Representatives Rules Committee after its first reading in the House on the same date.

In particular, the bill would add the concept of 'electronic signature' to the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA). It would also provide that if a private entity that, more than once, collects or discloses a biometric identifier or biometric information from the same person in violation of the bill would commit a single violation, for which the aggrieved person would be entitled to, at most, one recovery.
